Etymology[edit]

The root is ծամ- (cam-), from *ծամմ- (camm-), from *ծամբ- (camb-), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵm̥bʰ-. Cognates include Sanskrit जम्भ (jambha, jaw, tooth), Ancient Greek γαμφαί (gamphaí, jaw of an animal, beak), Albanian dhëmb (tooth), Old Church Slavonic зѫбъ (zǫbŭ) (Russian зуб (zub)) and Old English camb (English comb).
