Etymology [edit]
Disputed. According to Acharian derived from Proto-Indo-European *ǵr̥so-, zero-grade of *ǵers- (“to twist; to plait things from flexible twigs”) and cognate to Ancient Greek γάρσανα (garsana, “brushwood”), γέρρον (gerron, “wattle-fence”), Old Norse kjarr (“copsewood, brush-wood, thicket”). According to Diakonoff a word of Hurrian-Urartian substrate: compare Urartian (ṣârə, “orchard”), Hurrian (sar-me, “wood”).
