Martirosyan tentatively suggests derivation from Proto-Indo-European *gʷetu- (resin) with Old Irish beithe (box-tree), Middle Welsh bedw (birches), Welsh bedwen (birch), Latin betula (from Gaulish), Sanskrit जतु (jatu, gum, lac), Persian ژد (žad, gum), Latin bitūmen, Old English cwidu (English cud) as cognates.
