Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain. Usually connected with ոստ (ost). For the initial k- compare Russian костыль (kostylʹ), Slovene kostílja (Celtis australis; whip-handle made of this tree). Perhaps of substrate origin. See also Middle Armenian կոստղ (kostł).
