Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From the Proto-Indo-European compound *h₃ewi-peh₂-, from *h₃éwis (sheep) and *peh₂- (to protect). Cognate with Sanskrit अविपाल (avi-pā-lá-, shepherd).
