From Proto-Indo-European *meǵh₂- (big). Cognates include Sanskrit मह (mahá, great, mighty, strong, abundant), Middle Persian mas (great) (Persian مه (mih)), Ancient Greek μέγας (megas, big, large), Latin magnus and Old English micel (English much).
