Etymology[edit]

The original spelling is յաւն (yawn), of uncertain origin.

Martirosyan proposes derivation from յ- (y-, in, on, at) +‎ *աւ-ն- (*aw-n-), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃kʷ-n-, from *h₃ekʷ- (eye). For the *-n- he compares Sanskrit अक्षि (ákṣi), genitive singular अक्ष्णाः (akṣ-ṇ-áḥ).
