Etymology[edit]

From շուն (šun, dog) +‎ -ա- (-a-, fish) +‎ ձուկ (juk). Compare English dogfish and Ancient Greek θαλάττιος κύων (thaláttios kúōn, sea dog), both referring to one of the types of shark.
