Etymology[edit]

An Iranian borrowing,[1] probably composed with the preverb Proto-Iranian *pati- and the etymon of տոյժ (toyž).[2] Old Georgian პატიჟი (ṗaṭiži, punishment) is from the same Iranian source, according to Ačaṙean borrowed via Armenian.[3]
