Etymology[edit]

From Arabic بندق (bunduq, hazelnut). Contaminated with պինդ (pind), պնդ- (pnd-) and the suffix -ուկ (-uk). Ultimately from Ancient Greek Ποντικόν κάρυον (Pontikón káruon). The earliest attestation is 1633.
