Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

According to Ačaṙyan, from earlier *սինամարգ (*sinamarg) (note the dialectal forms of սիրամարգ (siramarg)), an Iranian borrowing. Compare Middle Persian synmwlw (Sēnmurw), Persian سیمرغ (Simorğ), Avestan 𐬨𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬖𐬋⸱𐬯𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬋 (mərəγō saēnō, the bird Saēna).

J̌ahukyan notes, that the word was reshaped in Armenian by folk etymology under the influence of սիր- (sir-, love).
