From Middle Persian *vitang, from Old Persian *vitanka-, composed of the prefix [script?] (vi-, down) and the root [script?] (tañč, to press). Compare also from this root Middle Persian [script?] (tang, narrow) and Persian تنگ (tang, narrow). See also թանձր (tʿanjr).
