Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian [script needed] (tap, warm). Compare Persian تاب (tāb, warmth), تب (tab, fever) and تف (taf, heat, warmth). Via Proto-Indo-European the Iranian word is connected with Latin tepidus and Russian тепло (teplo). See also տապակ (tapak) and տօթ (tōtʿ).
