According to Martirosyan from Proto-Armenian *tukuɫin, from *tukaɫin, from Proto-Indo-European *diuos gʷl̥h₂-eno- (divine acorn); see տիւ and կաղին. Compare Ancient Greek Διὸς βάλανος (sweet chestnut), Latin iūglāns (walnut).
