According to Martirosyan from Proto-Armenian *tukułin, from *tukałin, from Proto-Indo-European *diwos gʷl̥h₂-eno- (divine acorn); see տիւ (tiw) and կաղին (kałin) for the constituents and compare Ancient Greek Διὸς βάλανος (Diòs bálanos, sweet chestnut), Latin iūglāns (walnut).
