Etymology[edit]

The original spelling is տաւն (tawn), from Proto-Indo-European *dapni- (sacrifice). Cognates include Old Norse tafn (sacrifice), Latin daps (sacrificial feast) and probably damnum, Middle Irish dúan (poem), Ancient Greek δαπάνη (dapánē, expenditure), δάπτω (dáptō, to devour).
