Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The root is ցիտ- (cʿit-), from Proto-Indo-European *sḱid- (to cleave, to cut). Cognates include Ancient Greek σχίζω (skhízō), Lithuanian skiedžiu, Latin scindō, and Sanskrit छिन्दन्ति (chindanti).

Verb[edit]

ցտեմ (cʿtem)  (aorist indicative ցտեցի)

  1. (transitive) to graze, to rub the skin off, to scratch, to bruise, to notch, to jag
    ցտել զհերսcʿtel zhers — to tear out one's hair
  2. (transitive) to make incisions, to cut
  3. (transitive) to wrest, to extort, to carry off
  4. (transitive, medicine) to scarify, to cup
  5. (in the mediopassive, intransitive) to bruise oneself, to rub the skin off, to scratch oneself
