Hebrew[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Root
י־ב־שׁ (y-b-š)

From the root י־ב־שׁ (y-b-sh); compare יָבֵשׁ (yavésh, dry).

Verb[edit]

ייבש / יִבֵּשׁ (yibésh) third-singular masculine past (pi'el construction, passive counterpart יובש / יֻבַּשׁ)

  1. (transitive) To dry, to dry out: to cause to become dry.
ייבשתי את זה.yibáshti et ze. — I dried it.

Usage notes[edit]

  • Unlike English dry, Hebrew יִבֵּשׁ is specifically used when one person or thing is drying another. When a person or thing is becoming dry on its own, the related intransitive verb התייבש / הִתְיַבֵּשׁ (hityabésh) is used.
