From Proto-Semitic *kanap-, cognate with Akkadian 𒉺 (kappum, wing, branch), Hebrew כנף (kanáf, wing), Arabic كَنَف (kanaf, wing, side, bosom), Ge'ez ክንፍ (kənf, wing, fin).
