From common dialectal Arabic جَابَ (jāba), from a univerbation of جَاءَ بِ (jāʔa bi-, literally to come with), equivalent to Egyptian Arabic جا (ga) +‎ ب (bi-). Cognate with Moroccan Arabic جاب (jāb, to bring), Maltese ġab (to bring), Egyptian Arabic جاب (gāb, to bring) and Hijazi Arabic جاب (jāb, to bring).
