Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian hwmʾy (humāy, a bird of good omen; eagle), Avestan 𐬵𐬎𐬨𐬁𐬌𐬌𐬀 (humāiia, blessed), Sanskrit सुमाय (su-māyá, having excellent counsels or plans, very wise). All composed of Proto-Iranian *māyā- (blessing, happiness) and the prefix *hu- (good), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁su-. Related to Old Armenian հմայք (hmaykʻ, witchcraft, divination).
