From Middle Persian wʾnyst, wʾn- (wānist, wān-, to conquer), from Proto-Iranian *wan- (to triumph, win), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wan-, from Proto-Indo-European *wenh₁-. Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬥- (van-, to win, triumph, to overcome), Sanskrit वन् (van), English win.
