Persian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Iranian *čárHati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čálHati, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷel- (to move; to turn (around)).[1][2]

Indo-Iranian cognates include Ossetian цӕрын (cæryn, to live), Pashto څرېدل (śaredal, to pasture, graze), Avestan 𐬗𐬀𐬭𐬁𐬥𐬍 (carānī, I move, approach), and Sanskrit चरति (cárati, he moves). More distantly related to Ancient Greek πέλω (pélō), Latin colō, Old Church Slavonic коло (kolo, wheel).
