Etymology[edit]

From Old Persian [script needed] (vars), from Proto-Indo-European. Cognate with Sanskrit वल्श (válśa, twig, sprout) and Proto-Slavic *volsъ (hair). Akin to Old Armenian վարս (vars), an Iranian borrowing.
