From Middle Persian 𐭢𐭭𐭰 (ganj, treasure), from Old Persian, probably from Median. Compare Median *ganza-bara- and Iranian borrowings: Old Armenian գանձ (ganj), Georgian განძი (ganji), Ancient Greek γάζα (gáza), Latin gaza, Classical Syriac ܓܙܐ (gazzā), Hebrew גֵּנֶז (gḗnez), Arabic كنز (kanz) (> Spanish alcancía, Portuguese alcanzia).
