Classical Syriac[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From the root ܚ-ܫ-ܒ (IPA(key): /ħ-ʃ-b/) related to thinking. Compare Arabic حِسَاب (ḥisāb) and Hebrew חִשּׁוּב (ḥiššûḇ). The sense of "implication" is a calque of Arabic ضَمِير الشَأْن والقِصَّة (ḍamīr aš-šāʾn w-al-qiṣṣa(t)).
