From the root ܘ-ܫ-ܛ (w-š-ṭ) related to stretching or extending; compare Arabic وَسْط (wasṭ), Hebrew וֵשֶׁט (wḗšeṭ), and Ge'ez ውሳጤ (wəsaṭe).
