Etymology[edit]

From the root ܘ-ܬ-ܒ (IPA(key): /w-t-b/) related to sitting. Compare Hebrew מוֹשָׁב (môšāḇ). The sense of "part of the liturgy" is a calque of Ancient Greek κάθισμα (káthisma).
