Etymology[edit]

From the root ܫ-ܒ-ܚ (IPA(key): /ʃ-b-ħ/) related to praising; compare Arabic سَبْح (sabḥ) and Hebrew שֶׁבַח (šéḇaḥ). The sense of "opinion" is a calque of Ancient Greek δόξα (dóksa).
