Etymology[edit]

From ईसाई (īsāī, Christian) +‎ धर्म (dharm, religion).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (Delhi Hindi) IPA(key): /iː.sɑː.iː d̪ʱəɾm/, [iː.säː.iː‿d̪ʱɐɾm]

Usage notes[edit]

When used by Christians, the phrase is usually rendered मसीही धर्म (masīhī dharm), literally the "Messianic religion"; a direct translation of the term "Christianity". In contrast, the phrase ईसाई धर्म (īsāī dharm) literally means the "Jesuite religion", deriving from the Qur'anic form of Jesus' name, ईसा (īsā).
