Ultimately from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀘𑀁𑀤𑀺𑀆 (caṃdiā) (with Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-)), from Sanskrit चन्द्रिका (candrikā).[1][2] Compare Gujarati ચાંદી (cā̃dī), Hindustani چَاندِی (cāndī) / चाँदी (cā̃dī), Sindhi چانديِ / चांदी, Punjabi ਚਾਂਦੀ (cāndī) / چاندی (cāndī), Bengali চাঁদি (cãdi).
