Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Persian جوان (jawān), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HyúHā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂yuh₁en-. Cognate with Sanskrit युवन् (yúvan) and English young. Compare Bengali জোয়ান (jōẇan), Malayalam ജവാന (javāna), Telugu జవాను (javānu).
