Etymology[edit]

An original phrase from Proto-Indo-European *déms-pótis (master of the house), from *dṓm (house) (whence also Sanskrit दम (dáma, house, home)) , and *pótis (master) (whence also Sanskrit पति (páti, lord, master; husband)). Cognate with Ancient Greek δεσπότης (despótēs, lord, master).
