From Proto-Indo-Iranian *paH-, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂- (to protect). Cognates include Old Persian 𐎱𐎠𐎮𐎹 (pādiy), Latin pascō and Mycenaean Greek 𐀡𐀕 (po-me).
