Sanskrit[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *bhrj́hant-, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrǵʰ-ent- (high), a derivation of *bʰerǵʰ- (to rise), with cognates including Persian بالا (bālā, height) and بلند (boland, buland, high, tall), Old Armenian բարձր (barjr, high), Tocharian A pärkär (long) and Old English burg (English borough).

The corresponding verbal Proto-Indo-European root *bʰerǵʰ- (to become high, rise, elevate) also gave Sanskrit बृंहति (√bṛṃh / √bṛh, to make strong, make lofty, firm).
