From Proto-Indo-European *h₁léngʰus (light). Cognates include Latin levis, Ancient Greek ἐλαφρός (elaphrós) and ἐλαχύς (elakhús), Old Church Slavonic льгъкъ (lĭgŭkŭ) and Old English lēoht (English light).
