From Proto-Indo-Iranian *jʰanus, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵénus (chin, jaw). Cognates include Ancient Greek γένυς (génus), Latin gena, and Old English ċinn (English chin). The initial #h- instead of expected #j- is unexplained.
