From Proto-Indo-Iranian, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰés-to- (hand), from *ǵʰes-. Cognate with Old Persian [script?] (dasta) (compare modern Persian دست (dast)) and Avestan [script?] (zasta) [Cuneiform?][script?].
