Bengali[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Middle Bengali পরহা (porha), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀧𑀭𑀺𑀳𑀢𑀺 (parihati), from Sanskrit परिदधाति (paridadhāti, to place around; to put on clothes), composed of परि- (pari-, around) +‎ दधाति (dadhāti, to place). Cognate with Odia ପହରିବା (pôhôriba), Maithili 𑂣𑂯𑂱𑂩𑂥 (pahirab), Hindi पहिर्ना (pahirnā). Doublet of পরিধান (poridhan).
