Sanskritic formation from ਸਤਿ (sat, “truth”) + ਸ੍ਰੀ (srī, “great”) + ਅਕਾਲ (akāl, “timeless”), literally “timeless being, i.e. god”.

Usage notes[edit]
The complete usage is ਬੋਲੇ ਸੋ ਨਿਹਾਲ, ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ (bole so nihāl, sat srī akāl). It means roughly, “He/She, who says, ‘God is True’, be blessed”. In Punjabi the greeting one uses is tied directly to the religion of the one being greeted. ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ (sat srī akāl) is used by Sikhs throughout the world when greeting other Sikhs regardless of their native language. ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ (sat srī akāl) can also be transalated as "God is (the only) truth."
