From Proto-Dravidian *kākkay (a crow). Cognate with Kannada ಕಾಗೆ (kāge), Malayalam കാക്ക (kākka), Tamil காக்கை (kākkai), காக்காய் (kākkāy), Tulu ಕಕ್ಕೆ (kakke).
