From Sanskrit जम्बु (jambu) or जम्बू (jambū, jambul). Compare Old Khmer ជម្វូ (jamvū, rose apple); Modern Khmer ជម្ពូ (cumpuu, rose apple). Doublet of ชมพู (chom-puu) (both etyma).
