From Proto-Southwestern Tai *lɯəkᴰ (“to choose”). Cognate with Thai เลือก (lʉ̂ʉak), Northern Thai ᩃᩮᩬᩥᨠ, Lao ເລືອກ (lư̄ak), Shan လိူၵ်ႈ (lōek), Tai Nüa ᥘᥫᥐ (loek), Ahom 𑜎𑜢𑜤𑜀𑜫 (lük).
