From Old Georgian ფურცელი (purceli), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *purc₁-el-. Cognate with Mingrelian ფურჩა (purča) and Laz ფურჩა (purça).

Old Georgian

Etymology

From Proto-Georgian-Zan *purc₁-el- (“foliage, husk”). Klimov considers the latter to be derived from *prc₁-wn- (“to peel”) (whence also ფრცქვნა (prckvna, “to peel, clean”)).
