Etymology[edit]

Borrowing from Old Armenian քաղաք (kʿałakʿ), a derivative from Akkadian [script needed] (Kalakh, ancient city capital of Assyria on the Tigris) [script needed], called Calah in the Bible. An Iranian etymology has also been suggested.
