From Proto-Indo-European *h₁ed-. Cognates include Sanskrit अत्ति (atti, eats), Latin edō (I eat), Old Armenian ուտեմ (utem, to eat), Hittite 𒂊𒀉𒈪 (e-id-mi, I eat), Old Church Slavonic ꙗсти (jasti), and Old English etan (English eat).
