Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Hellenic *heďďomai, from Proto-Indo-European *séd-ye-, from *sed-. Compare ἵζω (hízō, set). Cognate with Old English sittan (English sit), Old Norse sitja and Old High German sizzen.
