By liquid metathesis from Proto-Slavic *moldъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *maldas, from Proto-Indo-European *(h₂)moldos (soft, weak). Cognates include Old Prussian maldai (boys), Latin mollis (soft, weak), Ancient Greek βλαδύς (bladús, weak) and ἀμαλδύνω (amaldúnō, to weaken, destroy).
