Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 之.

- The [ɕi] syllable, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
- The twelfth character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is サ and the next character is ス. The equivalent hiragana character is し.
