Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 世.

- The [se] phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
- The fourteenth character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is ス and the next character is ソ. The equivalent hiragana character is せ.
