Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 千.

- The [chi] phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
- The seventeenth character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is タ and the next character is ツ. The equivalent hiragana character is ち.
